Why have a doula on your birth team?
According to DONA International's position paper, "The Birth Doula's Contribution to Modern Maternity Care," research has shown that doula support can have several beneficial outcomes, including:
Reduced use of pain medication: Studies have shown that women who receive doula support during childbirth are less likely to use pain medication such as epidurals.
Shorter labor: Doula support has been linked to shorter labor duration and decreased likelihood of interventions such as Pitocin augmentation and vacuum or forceps-assisted delivery.
Increased satisfaction with childbirth experience: Women who receive doula support report higher levels of satisfaction with their childbirth experience, as well as increased confidence in their ability to give birth and care for their newborn.
Lower rates of postpartum depression: Research has shown that women who receive doula support during childbirth are less likely to experience postpartum depression or anxiety.
